Overview
Breakout Basketball was created with a mission to provide elite coaching and training to any player who has a passion for the game of basketball and a desire to improve. Our goal is to provide high quality instruction in an encouraging environment where all players can have the opportunity to grow and develop their skills. I have heard it said that “what many call talent is nothing but the capacity for doing continuous hard work in the right way.” Basketball is a beautiful and complex game that takes years to truly learn. The key to progress is sustained effort mixed with consistent quality instruction. We are excited to be able to offer a vital piece of that puzzle.
We take care to create an environment that is competitive and serious about improvement while at the same time relentlessly positive and encouraging. We set out to teach the game in a way that fosters growth, perseverance, and confidence on the part of our players. We also emphasize the values of the game such as sportsmanship, teamwork, selflessness, sustained effort, courage, and ultimately, leadership. When it comes to selecting teams, we agree that the level of competition should vary and be appropriate for each player, but the level of training should be high for all our athletes. There is no denying the power of quality instruction and repetition with feedback from coaches who know the game. Like any high-level skill, the concepts, fundamentals, and movement patterns in the game of basketball take time to develop but are essential if a player is to reach their potential.
Player Development
After seeing the results of our current systems of player development these past two decades, I honestly believe that when it comes to training our young players, we can do better. Our kids deserve access to a curriculum that is thoughtfully designed, instruction that is delivered in a way that is encouraging and respectful, and an opportunity to showcase their talents and their growth by competing at an appropriately high level. Some of them will no doubt achieve great things in this game, but at Breakout, we are not setting out to train the next Lebron James. We are equipping motivated players with the skills they need to not only pursue their dreams, but also to simply enjoy a lifetime of playing competitive basketball the way we have.
a note from our owner
For those of you who may not know me personally, I coached basketball at the Division 1 Varsity level for the past 19 years for Quincy High School and played four years of college basketball at the Division III level prior to that. I have been fortunate enough to coach many successful teams over the years and have been proud to see 24 of our QHS players continue their basketball careers at the collegiate level. Professionally, I have been a teacher at Quincy High School for 27 years where I taught AP Calculus and have also been a member of the school leadership as the coordinator of the QHS Interdisciplinary Teacher Teams. I have also served as the Coordinator of the QPS Summer School for over ten years. In addition, I have instructed future educators in Curriculum and Instructional Methods as an adjunct professor at Eastern Nazarene College. Whether it has been with adults, high school students or youth, teaching has always been my life’s passion. Teaching the game of basketball continues to be one of the most rewarding and joyful things I’ve ever done professionally, and I look forward to this next chapter with Breakout Basketball.
